#PreprintReviewChallenge – 22 September 2020
On September 22 ASAPbio is hosting the #PreprintReviewChallenge as part of Peer Review Week 2020. In a live session hosted online, we will get together to write constructive comments and reviews on preprints, with the aim to develop the largest collection to date of public commentary on preprinted research in a single day. PREReview, preLights, Peer Community In and Pubpeer will be joining us to interact with those interested in posting to those platforms; we will also have Maurine Neiman, editor at Proceedings of the Royal Society of London B and Thomas Lemberger from EMBO, who will provide tips and advice on the review of papers.
The session will include:
- Session overview
- Editorial tips on how to write constructive reviews
- Review preprints! – Work on preprint reviews and comments, interaction with preprint review platform reps
- Group discussion to review tally of comments and reviews, and share feedback
Here are is a list of preprints we’ll cover:
‘Shifts from pulled to pushed range expansions caused by reduction of landscape connectedness‘
‘Glycocalyx-mediated Cell Adhesion and Migration‘
‘Genome-wide maps of enhancer regulation connect risk variants to disease genes‘
‘Ubiquitous selfish toxin-antidote elements in Caenorhabditis species‘
‘Preprinting a pandemic: the role of preprints in the COVID-19 pandemic‘
We’ll have more preprint suggestions on the day and you can also just come to co-work with others on reviewing a preprint of your choice.
Preprint adoption is increasing and preprints have played an important role in the communication of research related to COVID-19. Commentary and reviews on preprints are beneficial to both authors and readers: authors receive feedback they can use to improve their paper, readers have useful additional context on the work and on how to interpret the findings. Commentary on preprints is also an opportunity to gain experience in peer review. In alignment with Peer Review Week’s theme on Trust, we will look to support trust in preprints by developing a set of comments and reviews on preprinted research and putting the spotlight on this important activity.
No prior experience of preprint review is needed, we will be providing tips on how to review, and you can choose to comment on the full paper or specific aspects of it, according to your expertise.
Build trust in preprints by joining the #PreprintReviewChallenge on September 22.
