ASAPbio Community Call: Preprints & the Global South

September 11, 2024 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm UTC+0

Graphic for an ASAPbio community call titled Preprints & the Global South, featuring headshots of two speakers: Binay Panda, a professor from Jawaharlal Nehru University, and Lamis Elkheir, a lecturer from the University of Khartoum, scheduled for 4pm UTC, September 11, 2024.

Preprints and the wider open science landscape has made great strides over the past decade. Preprint adoption has grown to 12% of the biomedical literature and preprint peer review is on the rise. Institutions and funders are increasingly recognising and supporting preprints. However, this is only the situation in the Global North. In the Global South, preprints are still heavily underutilised with large issues existing around awareness. Additionally, the voices and specific concerns and challenges within the Global South are too often not listened to by the Global North. In this community call, we will hear from researchers based in India and Africa about their experiences with preprints. Following this there will be a Q&A and discussion on how we can provide greater equity to the preprint landscape.

Speakers:

Binay Panda, Professor, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi

Lamis Elkheir, Lecturer, University of Khartoum, Sudan
