Johnny Coates
Jonny Coates Associate Director

Jonny has been the associate director at ASAPbio since 2023, having originally joined the community early in its creation.

Originally an immunologist, since 2020, he has developed a metascience research progamme focussed on preprints and science communication, initially publishing two papers investigating the use of preprints during the COVID-19 pandemic. He has appeared on international radio stations (BBC Radio 4, ORF & German National radio) and his work has featured in numerous journalistic outlets. He created and hosts the Preprints in Motion podcast focused on highlighting the benefits of preprints for early career researchers and sits on the scientific advisory boards of Europe PMC, eiRxiv and AREN.

Jonny is a world-leading expert in preprints in the life sciences and a leading advocate for change within research culture, believing that the lynchpin for this change lies with changing the publishing system. He is based in Sheffield, UK.
